What has been researched on birds in the Pampas ecoregion in the period 1980-2020 and what for?

Abstract

In recent decades, the Pampas ecoregion has suffered major changes in land use/cover driven by agricultural intensification. This suggests the need for a critical review of the bird species that have been studied and the approaches taken to identify information gaps. In this work, I used a bibliometric approach in which I considered the number of articles published as an indicator of research effort. This approach was complemented with a survey to researchers in activity. Through a search in Scopus, I compiled the articles published during the period 1980-2020 on Pampas bird species. The results showed that research during this period has focused on some common and widely distributed species, but also on a few with conservation problems. Basic studies have been giving way to studies with applied purposes, more related to decision-making on land use, management and conservation. The pattern of publications in the Pampas ecoregion suggests that researchers follow their own agenda, determined by the traditions of the research groups and the use of species as ecological and behavioral models, which also entails taxonomic and thematic biases. In this sense, there is a lack of studies on many species with distribution in the Pampas ecoregion, particularly some with conservation problems like the Black and White Monjita (Xolmis dominicanus), and on topics such as ecotoxicology and ethnozoography. This pattern indicates the need to expand approaches through interdisciplinary studies.
