Abstract

Next-generation sequencing techniques have changed the way of obtaining genetic data for studies in avian conservation, from the analysis of a few loci located in a small portion of the genome to obtaining information from hundreds to thousands of loci distributed all over the genome. A larger number of markers provides more information for phylogenetic, introgression and population structure studies, and allows a better estimation of demographic parameters. Measures such as heterozygosity, parentage, paternity and inbreeding can be estimated more accurately. In addition, one of the greatest contributions of genomic studies is the identification of both adaptive and neutral variation. In this paper I briefly explain the methodological basis of next-generation sequencing and show examples of the use of genomic data in conservation studies in birds.
