Diversity of the bird assemblages of Santa Lucía Wetlands Protected Area, Uruguay

Abstract

Wetlands are ecosystems of great importance because they perform a wide range of ecosystem functions and support high levels of biodiversity. The Santa Lucía Wetlands, located in southern Uruguay, are considered an Important Bird Area. Despite the ornithological relevance of this area, few studies focusing on birds have been carried out there. The aim of this study was to characterize the bird assemblages in the southern part of the Santa Lucía Wetlands Protected Area. Species richness, composition, and relative abundance were estimated in the main natural environments included in the protected area (Wetlands, Grassland, Native Forest, and Beach). Monthly surveys were conducted throughout one year in each environment, and bird species and the number of individuals were recorded. A total of 198 bird species were found. Richness was highest at the Beach (91 species), followed by Native Forest (65), Grassland (62), and Wetlands (59). Birds threatened both nationally and globally, as well as other conservation priority species in Uruguay, were recorded. The substantial number of species and individuals observed reflects the wide availability of resources in the area. The results highlight the importance of this site for birds and the need for a wise management of the area.
