Postnatal growth in South American seabirds: adaptations, state of knowledge and statistical tools for its study

Abstract

The postnatal growth stage is key in the life cycle of individuals since variation in growth trajectories and the resulting juvenile phenotypes can directly affect competitive abilities, survival and future mating success, which is ultimately reflected in terms of fitness. In this sense, although different aspects of body growth have been studied in birds in general and seabirds in particular, studies in South American seabirds are scarce. Here, I present a synthesis of proximate causes, ultimate causes, and implications of variation in postnatal growth in seabirds, also addressing the usefulness of some statistical tools for its study. I also present a bibliographic review of the existing information for the region, identifying aspects of interest to be considered in future studies.
