Thinking about research practices with seabirds: ethics and affections for multispecies cohabitation

Abstract

Research practices in seabirds vary and involve methodologies ranging from mere direct observation of the animals to the deployment of devices on individuals, captivity, among others. The scientific/academic community itself recognizes the negative effect of some of these practices on different aspects of the biology of individuals and populations. These methodologies have been changing over time both with the advancement of technological development and with new reflections on consciousness, suffering, and animal pain as the basis of ethics. In this work, we are interested in reflecting on research practices with seabirds from a philosophical approach, integrating epistemological, ethical, and affective aspects and considering a historical perspective as well. We believe that enabling questions and reflections on this topic, which require pauses and dialogues, will allow us to open up possibilities for other ways of approaching research practices. Besides finding out alternatives for relating to and getting closer to birds, and even enabling other ways of cohabiting in the world.
