Abstract

This paper presents the first taxonomical notes concerning the avifauna of the Northeast of the Province of San Luis, a region that is, owing to its geographical situation, a transitional area between subspecies of birds that extend throughout the East and West of Argentina, as is shown by some of the races here considered, such is the case of Zenaida auriculata auriculata (Des Murs), Cyanoliseus patagonus andinus Dabbene & Lillo, Stigmatura budytoides inzonata Wetmore & Peters, Troglodytes aedon rex Berlepsch & Leverkühn and others. The specimens of Saltator aurantiirostris Vieillot, which have been collected in the area, are analyzed and compared with specimens from other regions, arriving to the following conclusion: the white spot on the outer rectrices, given as an exclusive character of the race S. a. tilcarae Chapman, appears to be frequent in most populations of the species. It has not been possible, with the available specimens, to ascertain the subspecific status of the populations of the following species: Nothura darwinii, Eudromia elegans, Embernagra platensis, and Lepidocolaptes angustirostris.
