Special Issue: Seabirds in South America

07 September 2023

In 2005, El Hornero published a special issue (Eds. P. Yorio, F. Quintana, and J. López de Casenave) featuring a series of review articles and syntheses of current knowledge on aspects of the biology and conservation of seabirds in Argentina. Over the years, that volume has become the most cited in the entire history of our journal.

Given the advances in scientific knowledge regarding this group of birds over the past 20 years in coastal and marine ecosystems worldwide, El Hornero intends to publish another special issue on seabirds, expanding the call for papers not only to those studying these species in Argentina but also to researchers in other South American countries with coastlines (i.e., Uruguay, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru). To this end, we invite the submission of scientific articles that present a review and synthesis (systematic or meta-analysis of the literature) of the current state of knowledge regarding the biology, ecology, behavior, physiology, health status, management, and conservation of seabirds in the various countries of the region. We will also accept “Point of View” articles presenting perspectives that include opinions based on the literature.

It is hoped that the selected articles will help highlight the value of existing information, thereby catalyzing and strengthening both purely academic aspects and those necessary for decision-making regarding management and conservation throughout South America. To participate in this special issue, please submit a proposal including only the title and a potential abstract of up to 300 words for the full paper to be submitted. The proposal must be sent by November 1, 2023, to the journal’s email address: elhornero@avesargentinas.org.ar. Proposals will be evaluated by the editors in charge of this special issue. Full manuscripts corresponding to accepted proposals must be submitted by April 1, 2024, via Scholastica. It is worth noting that El Hornero is indexed in the Scopus-SCImago database. All accepted articles appear in a preliminary version on the journal’s website and in Scopus.
