Abstract

Alarm is felt regarding the future of the continental population of the Ruddy-headed Sheld-goose of South America, whose numbers in a recent count revealed a marked decrease. Only thirty (minimum) were seen on the breeding grounds in Tierra del Fuego. Metacarpal spurs have been found on two occasions embedded in the breast muscles of the Southern Screamer. The horny sheath of these is often loose, probably moulted regularly, and could be left in the flesh of an adversary during battles.
