Abstract
Lesser Rheas (Pterocnemia p. pennata) surveys were conducted between 29 Oct - 2 Nov 1993, 19 - 28 Dic 1994 and 02 -12 Ene 1996 along 3258 km of Patagonian roads in Santa Cruz province, Argentina. In average it was necessary to travel 90.50 km to contact the species. Solitary birds were seen in nine opportunities, males with chicks in five and groups of birds (two or more adults) were encountered in twenty-three occasions (24.32%, 13.51% and 62.16% of the contacts with the species respectively). These roadside censuses seem to be the first for the subspecies pennata, thus, not allowing conclusions about the status of the species in Southern Patagonia as data are lacking from the past and from other areas of its distribution.
