Resumen
Se analizaron las vocalizaciones de Bubo magellanicus a lo largo de toda su distribución y las de las subespecies de Bubo virginianus de América del Sur y de América del Norte y Central. Se distinguieron cuatro vocalizaciones diferentes en América del Sur, coincidentes con las distribuciones de las formas magellanicus, nigrescens y nacurutu, y otra aparentemente sin nominar, registrada en Piura, Perú, denominada con el nombre común de Ñécu en este trabajo. No se encontraron diferencias sustanciales entre las vocalizaciones de Bubo virginianus nacurutu y las del resto de las subespecies de América del Norte y Central. El análisis de las vocalizaciones confirma que Bubo magellanicus es una especie diferente de Bubo virginianus, sugiere que la forma nigrescens del norte de los Andes debería ser elevada a nivel de especie (abandonando su estatus de subespecie de Bubo virginianus) e indica que las formas de Bubo virginianus de ambos hemisferios corresponden a la misma especie.
