Resumen

El Pingüino de Magallanes (Spheniscus magellanicus) se reproduce en las costas del sur de Sudamérica, con colonias en Chile y Argentina, incluyendo las Islas Malvinas. La especie exhibe movimientos migratorios estacionales durante el invierno, alcanzando regiones costeras de la provincia de Buenos Aires en Argentina, y también en Uruguay y el sur de Brasil. En Argentina, y durante dicho periodo, los aspectos vinculados a su ecología y las implicaciones para la biología de la conservación permanecen enigmáticos. En este estudio examinamos la ocurrencia de una proporción de sexos asimétrica entre los pingüinos juveniles varados en la costa norte de Argentina. En total, se analizaron 187 individuos (aproximadamente 46.5% sobre el total de aves, n = 402) a los cuales se les pudo determinar el sexo mediante observación directa de las gónadas a lo largo del periodo de estudio (temporadas estivales de 2017, 2018, 2019 y 2021). Nuestros hallazgos sugieren una proporción de sexos asimétrica con 64% de individuos hembras, lo que representa 1.83 hembras varadas para cada macho. Por otro lado, de este trabajo surge que los individuos juveniles varados en el sudeste bonaerense presentan diferencias en su biometría entre sexos (al menos en el largo de cabeza y el largo de ala). Este es el primer estudio que utiliza aves varadas para analizar la proporción de sexos en el Pingüino de Magallanes durante la temporada no reproductiva en Argentina.
